How an Army veteran helped build an insurance franchise system rooted in discipline and purpose

MIAMI, FL, UNITED STATES, November 5, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- This Veterans Day, Estrella Insurance spotlights Vice President and Director of Operations Richard Estrella’s journey from Army helicopter crew chief (67N2F) to franchise leader and how his military experience shapes his entrepreneurial path.

At just 17 years old, Richard Estrella enlisted in the U.S. Army, driven by a calling to serve his country. Nearly four decades later, the discipline, leadership, and purpose he learned in uniform continue to drive his leadership, approach to business, and the franchise system he helped build at Estrella Insurance.

From Basic Training to Business Leader

For Estrella, military service was never a question of if, but when. At 17, he committed to joining the Army, beginning basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He went on to train as a crew chief on a UH-1H helicopter before being stationed with the 6th Infantry Division at Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Born and raised in the Caribbean, Estrella learned to quickly adapt to the harsh Arctic conditions. During Operation Brim Frost in 1989, temperatures plunged to nearly 80 degrees below zero. Despite the extreme conditions, he remained focused on his responsibilities as a soldier, maintaining his helicopter and ensuring it was mission-ready.

"The Army handed me the keys to my own helicopter, and I was responsible for keeping it ready," Estrella recalled. "That experience taught me ownership and accountability at a young age.”

Over four years of service, Estrella developed a leadership philosophy centered on discipline, teamwork, and perseverance. One of his most transformative experiences was completing the Army's Primary Leadership Development Course (PLDC 89’), which challenged soldiers to lead under pressure and take responsibility for their entire team.

"That was a life changer for me," Estrella said. "Even if you know that the mission is impossible, it's still the mission." That philosophy would become the foundation of his approach to business.

Bringing Military Precision to Franchising

At Estrella Insurance, Richard Estrella applied his military training to help develop a franchise system built on established procedures, accountability, and operational support. More than 20 years ago, he wrote the foundation of the company's operations manual, which has since evolved into a comprehensive guide for franchise owners.

Today, the company's network of more than 240 offices operates with standardized processes, training, reporting, and support systems, many of which reflect Estrella's Army experience.

"The military teaches you to follow processes, solve problems and lead people," Estrella said. "Franchising works much the same way. You have a proven system, a clear set of steps and a team supporting you. Veterans already understand how to operate within that structure."

A New Mission for Those Who Served

Ric believes veterans bring a distinct advantage to franchise ownership. Their ability to follow systems, make decisions under pressure, take initiative, and remain accountable translates naturally into entrepreneurship.

He also recognizes the importance of providing veterans with the structure and support they may miss after leaving military service.
For those considering business ownership, Estrella Insurance offers an established franchise model, access to more than 100 insurance carriers, and a network of experienced operators who can provide guidance.

The company further supports veterans in their franchise journey by providing a 10% discount on the franchise fee for honorably discharged veterans. As a veteran himself, Estrella actively seeks opportunities to work with former service members and welcomes more veterans into the franchise network.
"Veterans understand that challenges are part of the mission," said Estrella. "You learn to trust your training, take responsibility, and keep moving forward. Those lessons stay with you long after you take off the uniform."
