Dutch FM resigns over Israel

(MENAFN) Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp has resigned, along with Minister for Foreign Trade Hanneke Boerma, in protest against the coalition government’s refusal to impose sanctions on Israel over its actions in Gaza. Their departure reduces the Dutch caretaker government to just 32 of 150 parliamentary seats.

Both ministers, members of the Social Contract (NSC) party, had called for measures such as banning imports from Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territories, citing the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza. When the coalition partners refused to support sanctions, the NSC decided to withdraw from the government. Veldkamp previously served as Dutch ambassador to Israel.

The resignations come amid growing international scrutiny of Israel’s military operations in Gaza. Last month, the Netherlands and 20 other nations condemned Israeli plans to build a settlement in the West Bank. Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces recently launched an operation to take full control of Gaza City, following a Hamas incursion in October 2023 that killed roughly 1,200 people and left 250 hostages. According to Gaza authorities, Israeli strikes have killed more than 62,000 civilians since then.
