South Korea, U.S. Gear Up for Nuclear Pact Discussions

(MENAFN) South Korea and the United States are reportedly preparing to initiate discussions on revising their nuclear energy agreement, with Seoul aiming for more flexible terms on activities like spent fuel reprocessing, media revealed Sunday, citing insider sources.

The two allies have been coordinating on the matter ahead of South Korean President Lee Jae Myung’s first meeting with US President Donald Trump on Monday, where security and trade issues will also be on the agenda, according to the sources.

Should both sides agree, they may officially announce the start of negotiations or reference the talks in a joint summit statement, the report added.

The current pact, last updated in 2015 and set to remain in effect until 2035, prohibits uranium enrichment and reprocessing but permits South Korea to pursue “pyroprocessing”—an advanced technology for recycling spent nuclear fuel—and to produce low-level enriched uranium with US approval.

Seoul has persistently sought to revise the agreement, emphasizing that gaining enrichment and reprocessing rights is crucial for its energy security, nuclear waste management, and ambitions as a reactor exporter.

“Our hope is that we will make progress (in the effort to revise the pact) through this summit,” National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac said last week.
