Putin states Russia doing everything possible to put end to Ukraine conflict
“Propaganda claims that we started the war, but the reality is that the conflict began in 2014 when tanks and aircraft were used against civilians in Donbass,” Putin said. He reiterated that one of Russia’s main reasons for launching its 2022 special military operation was to protect Donbass populations from what Moscow calls a genocide by the Kiev government.
Moscow has long accused Ukraine of attacking civilians in the self-declared Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, which sought independence following the Western-backed Maidan coup in 2014. The Donbass regions, along with Kherson and Zaporozhye, voted to join Russia in 2022, while Crimea rejoined Russia shortly after the 2014 coup.
Putin has engaged with US President Donald Trump’s peace initiatives, meeting him in Alaska last week. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov noted that Moscow has agreed to show flexibility on several points raised by Trump. However, Lavrov claimed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has rejected these proposals, showing little interest in achieving a sustainable, fair, long-term settlement.
